Dear Eve,

That's a fantastic idea - thank you so much for suggesting it. I'll certainly put it forward at our next meeting.

Best wishes,

Just musing but has there been any interest in a book club (of sorts)?

For example - Would it be possible for someone to sign up to a Hesperus book of the month type club? Each month (or however often you publish) a brand spanking new book appears through the post? Ensuring readers never miss out. There are so many books from Hesperus I find it hard to keep up! I've yet to read one I didn't enjoy.

If people wanted to get really fancy they could opt for in for books of certain genre.

I think the publisher's responsibility here is to follow their instincts; and, if there's something they genuinely feel uncomfortable publishing, don't publish it. But the most important thing, of which we mustn't lose sight, is that children should learn to read critically and thoughtfully.

One can always find self justification. However, I think it is better to strive to live your life as an example of the best you can be. If I believe that refined sugar is an abused poison, I will not open a donut shop; there are plenty others. I am not in the business of profiting by promoting something I disapprove.

You can reject work that can be published elsewhere. If you establish your guidelines, your authors will know what is acceptable in your house.

As a non-Brit and non-English speaker - and so probably subject to a different literary canon - I was quite pleased to reach a count of 18, plus a few maybes and a few more in progress. All based on the Big Read list linked by Rob, but I guess I'd gain and lose book sin equal measure if I based the count on one of the morphed lists.
Even if it's hard to find any objective criteria, I'm not sure if popularity is the best measure either. The top place for Lord of the Rings and the cluster of Harry Potter books hints at trends that might be short term - or heavily influenced by what's on offer on film rather than paper?
But as a bit of a stats nerd, I'm a sucker for lists ;-)

Hiya,

Good to have you back ER...

I'll be heading to "echoey London" to live pretty soon and this means my holiday reading library will be reduced from huge to tiny because of the move.

The most exciting new book, for me, is Gabriel Josipovici's "After and Making Mistakes" -- two short novels from the Master. Coetzee's "Summertime" is eagerly awaited too.

My behumbled library will contain the rest of my Josipovici books, my Blanchot and Beckett books, a copy of Dante, a collected T.S. Eliot and Wallace Stevens... and that'll be mostly it to begin with!

Dear Catherine,

Thanks for stopping by, and I'm glad you enjoyed The Squabble. I'm afraid that particular title predates my time here, though I'm going to do a bit of detective work and will let you know if I uncover any details. Generally speaking, though, we try not to restrict ourselves to commissioning forewords from people who have previously written or spoken about the authors in question. As each of our translated works also has a translator's introduction, which provides scholarly, textual and historical information, there's space for the forewords to be more personal, even anecdotal. This helps us to bring what have been seen as obscure or academic works to general readers in a fresh way. I hope this is helpful; that one is a great foreword, isn't it?

All the best,

Dear Reg - thanks for the recommendation -- some really good non-fiction will be just what the doctor ordered, I'd have thought; slightly concerned, though, that the subject matter will break my heart. I'll let you know how I get on.

Praise from the Caustic Cover Critic is praise indeed! Thank you for stopping by -- we all love your blog. We're distributed in the UK by GBS, though if you're an independent customer the easiest way to order our titles for the time being is probably through The Book Depository.

Thanks,
