Excellent to see you (and Katya) too Ellie.

I've still not really recovered. LBF always drains the lifeblood ... It is simultaneously a drag to have to cram so much into a few days but a thrill to meet up with folk you've been emailing for the last year or more ...

Best embassy: the Spanish one!

Hello Kristin, and welcome to the blog. I've put a response to your question in an email to you in case you don't check back here.

And Simon, you're absolutely right. I think I can feel a petition coming on...

Hi there,
I'm a postgrad student, and am currently writing a paper comparing various editions of Keats, and am working with Hesperus Press's edition of his 'Fugitive Poems', with a foreword by Andrew Motion.

I wondered if you might be able to tell me a bit about the editorial process the press uses, and particularly if your foreword writers also edit your editions. I have not been able to ferret out the name of whoever edited this edition, and would be very curious to know who it is, both for the sake of citing them correctly in my essay and to get some insight into Hesperus's methods.

Thanks,
Kristin

Hi Mark,

It's nice to be back!

I agree that there'll always be a place for lengthy biographies, but the great thing about 'Brief Lives' is that they allow those who don't have the time or the inclination to dedicate themselves to 700 pages on, say, Dickens to cover ground much more quickly and greatly enrich their knowledge, but without compromising on quality. These books really are fantastically written and researched, as well -- if I do say so myself!

The first titles hit the major names, with Brief Lives of Conrad, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, Flaubert and Balzac planned for 2008, but it's a series with so much scope that I'm sure we'll want to branch into some lesser-known names a little further down the line.

Apologies if this response is somewhat garbled: am suffering from a horrific computer-induced headache!

All the best,

Ellie

Good to have you "back in the room" Ellie.

These look really nice! I like a chunky biog, I must admit, but Ackroyd's recent mini-Poe biog shows a short biog can be a provocative and informative one.

I'm hoping as well as classic authors like these mentioned, you could maybe look into Brief Lives of folk like Marguerite Duras or the recently sadly deceased Alain Robbe-Grillet...?

I'm always a bit worried about the art as comfort blanket thing. Sometimes books help me, but sometimes walking the dogs, listening to music, or downing one to many fine ales does the job ...

But if these guys are finding that literature can help people shake of their Black Dog, then more power to their elbow...

Ahh, the Wirral -- land of placcies (real Liverpudlians think of them as plastic scousers!)

It is indeed -- gold star winging its way to you (and welcome to the blog, by the way!).

If you're a Lamb fan, you might be interested to know that we're publishing the 'Essays of Elia' in March, along with a foreword by the wonderful Matthew Sweet. Link here: http://www.hesperuspress.com/catalogue/book.asp?id=275.
